Here you will find answers to some of the questions I am often asked. If you have any other questions, please contact me.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF A PHOTO SHOOT?
The process goes a little something like this:
- You book a session and tell me a little about you/your dog/your family.
- I can advise on suitable locations and we set a time and a place to meet.
- We meet and do the photo shoot which is relaxed, informal and fun. This usually takes between 1-2 hours.
- I will not end the session until I have a variety of photographs.
- I will go away and edit the photographs for you, producing a gallery of approx. 25 images from our session, sometimes more. I do not batch edit. I spend time hand editing each and every photograph to make it perfect for you.
- We meet again so as I can show you your gallery in person.
- You are now free to order prints, products or wall art of your choice.
- I deliver your products (normally within 2-3 weeks)
WHERE ARE YOU BASED?
I am located in Yate, between Bristol and Gloucestershire. However, as I am a lifestyle photographer and am mobile, I can travel to all areas in Bristol, Gloucestershire, and Bath. I can also cover some areas of the Cotswolds, Somerset, and Wiltshire.
HOW FAR WILL YOU TRAVEL?
I can travel anywhere in the South West, but normally 15 miles from Chipping Sodbury/Yate, before travel costs are incurred. However, you are very welcome to come to me if you live outside of this area. I have many parks/woodlands/lakes around here that I use for my photo shoots.
I can sometimes make arrangements to travel outside of my area and around the South West. I frequently visit areas of Somerset, Wiltshire, and the Cotswolds. Please message me with your requirements.
WHERE DO YOUR PHOTO SHOOTS TAKE PLACE?
I am very much a lifestyle photographer and love to capture your memories at an outdoor location. This is usually a nearby park, woodland, lake or meadow, somewhere that means something to you and your family and will be discussed with you prior to your photo shoot. Other locations include the beach (Weston Super Mare, Clevedon, Severn Beach for example) or City (Bristol or Bath).
HOW LONG DO SESSIONS LAST?
My sessions usually last up to 2 hours, however, this can vary and my sessions are unrushed and relaxed. I will not leave the session until I am happy that I have captured enough.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Just yourself and whoever is being photographed. You are welcome to bring any toys/teddies for children and for pets. You may want to bring a change of clothing for children sessions and some treats/water for your dog if you are having a pet session. Bring a drink and some snacks if you have young children.
For pet sessions, please keep your dog on a lead until I advise. Your dog should be wearing a collar. If he is used to wearing a harness, I may ask you to take this off during the session, as they can be distracting in photographs.
Please only bring the subjects being photographed to the session. Bringing lots of family members or friends often causes distractions and this sometimes means I cannot get the shot you want. Parents are always welcome to the shoot, however!
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR FOR A SESSION?
There are perfect opportunities all year round for a photo shoot, and I photograph all throughout the year. Springtime is perfect if you like colourful backdrops, bluebells, or green woodland areas. Summertime is perfect for sunsets or wildflowers. Autumn is perfect for fallen leaves and warm tones, and winter is perfect for snowy or frosty mornings or bare trees.
Some locations don't change in the different seasons. For example, the beach. It is just a bit chillier in the Winter!
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF DAY FOR A SESSION?
If it is a dog photography shoot, I will avoid midday in the summer months and wait until it is cooler for your dog. This will normally be early morning or evening. I will decide what the most appropriate time is when we have talked about your dog and we have more idea of the weather.
For family shoots, it is really up to you when you would prefer, though evening light is a little more dreamy.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE WEATHER IS BAD?
I will check on the weather forecast a few days before your photo shoot is scheduled and if in the unlucky event it should pour with rain or we have high winds, I will contact you to reschedule our shoot. I want you to enjoy the experience without getting soaked or blown away. Snow and fog will usually not hinder our photo shoot - in fact it can make wonderful photographs.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
I will discuss this with you prior to your shoot, depending on the location we have chosen. Simple, plain coloured clothes work best, something that compliments each other. If it is soggy underfoot, please wear appropriate footwear and dress for the weather. You are welcome to bring a few outfits for children and I can advise before we begin which one would work best.
CAN I BOOK FOR A WEEKEND?
Yes! I work every day of the week and will fit you in where I can - I do not charge more for weekend sessions, so they remain at the same price as weekday sessions. There are particular times of day I prefer to shoot, so I will advise you on this when booking.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MYSELF OR MY PET/MY CHILD IS POORLY?
If this should happen, I ask you to contact me asap so as we can postpone and reschedule our photo shoot. I will not photograph a poorly child, as this will be a miserable experience for them and I want them to have fun so as I can create the best photographs possible.
WHAT IF MY DOG IS NERVOUS/NAUGHTY?
Clients are often worried that their dog wouldn't sit still long enough for me to take a photograph. The truth is, that between the perfectly timed shots you see in my portfolio, there is chaos, adventure and a lot of laughter. I love nothing more than to see a dog in his natural environment, getting into mischief and being himself. I will often follow the dog around and capture him naturally. I have never come away from a session without any images.
It is also natural for your dog to be nervous in new situations. I will never force a dog to sit and pose for me - we will always go at his own pace. Please feel reassured that I am also a qualified dog behaviourist and I am familiar with working with nervous dogs and have ways of keeping them calm.
CAN MY DOG STAY ON THE LEAD DURING A SHOOT?
Yes. Please keep your dog on lead until otherwise advised. If your dog has a poor recall or is easily distracted, then I prefer them to stay on the lead during the photo shoot so as I can capture the best images of them. With a little bit of trickery, I can make those leads disappear in your final photographs.
I HAVE A PET THAT IS NOT A DOG. CAN YOU PHOTOGRAPH THEM TOO?
Yes! I photograph cats, horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, anything of the fluffy variety. I do not photograph reptiles.
These sessions are the same price. For cats, I will come to your home.
WHAT DOES THE PHOTO SHOOT COST INCLUDE?
I have recently introduced a variety of packages you can choose from if you wish. These can be found on the Investment tab. If you opt for the session only, the price for the photo shoot is for my time and talent, a 1-2 hour photo shoot, a hand edit of every single photograph and a private viewing gallery of approximately 25 beautifully edited photographs. Please note that the session only package does not include any prints or products. A full pricing brochure of artwork products available will be given to you should you want to order any images.
Other packages are available and can be tailored to meet your needs. I currently have a session only package, whereby you can choose what products you would like after your session, a print package whereby you receive three or five bordered 10 x 8 prints included, and also a digital package which includes 5 digital images. All artwork products are available to you whatever package you choose.
I WOULD PREFER A STUDIO SESSION - DO YOU OFFER THESE?
I am primarily a location photographer, however, I may be offering studio shoots in the near future. If you would prefer an indoor session, I may be able to offer a limited amount of these at my studio in the Yate area. These will only be available for pets. Alternatively, I can offer a lifestyle type photo shoot in your own home. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss a studio/home session.
HOW MANY IMAGES WILL WE BE ABLE TO CHOOSE FROM?
I pride myself on capturing and producing a variety of images of an incredibly high standard. On average, I will present you with 25 beautifully edited photographs from your shoot. This can vary and sometimes you will get more. For mini sessions, you will have a gallery of 5-10 images.
HOW LONG DO I NEED TO WAIT UNTIL I CAN SEE MY IMAGES?
I know after a photo shoot, you are eager to see the images. I aim to get your gallery to you within 14 days. I often post sneak peeks on my Facebook page for you to see within 2 days.
Finished galleries will be presented to you at a personal viewing or an online gallery if you live outside of the area.
CAN I REQUEST AN ONLINE GALLERY RATHER THAN AN IN-PERSON VIEWING?
Yes. If you would prefer an online gallery, there is a small charge of £15 which will be payable to create your online gallery, and viewable for 7 days.
WHAT PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE TO ORDER?
I offer a variety of beautiful wall art products, ranging from acrylics to canvases, as well as framed prints and albums which tell a story of your photo shoot with me. These can be found on the artwork page under the Investment tab.
I very much recommend purchasing the finished product, however, digital images are available to purchase if you wish.
DO YOU SELL THE DIGITAL IMAGES?
The answer is yes. However, the digital images are the most expensive product on my price list and there is a reason for this. They are a premium product. I created those photographs. They are my art, my work. When I hand them over to you, you have full control over how many get printed, where they go, or what happens to them. You receive full printing rights to be able to print the images however many times you would like, at whatever size. You have them forever.
If you purchase the full set of digital images from your shoot, these also come with a set of black and white images of every photograph. I cannot discount digital images. They are more expensive than a single piece of wall art because of reproduction purposes. Digital images are for personal use only.
WHY DO YOU PREFER THE FINISHED PRODUCT TO DIGITAL IMAGES?
I like to supply my clients with the 'finished product'. A piece of stunning wall art that you can place above your fireplace. I know clients often prefer digital images these days, however, when I hand over a USB of digital files, they will likely end up in a drawer, only to be looked at once, maybe twice a year. Those images will more than likely never get printed, and they will be memories which end up being stashed away, only for technology to move on and you may no longer be able to print from them. This leads to a generation forgotten.
Even if you are able to print from them, the quality from a high street store will never be the same as from a professional printer. They can suffer a loss of quality and fade.
My motto is to print everything. Keep your memories printed so as you can see them every single day. Do not stash them away. Photography is so important to me and I could easily sell every client the digital files - but this isn't about money, this is about memories and I want you to be able to look at them every day and to have them on your wall.
WHO OWNS COPYRIGHT OF IMAGES?
I will always retain copyright of all images, at all times.
If you purchase digital images, you will be given a printing license which means that you can reproduce and print these images in unlimited amounts, for personal use only or to give to family and friends. You will not be allowed to copy, edit, crop, enter these images into competitions, use them on social media without a watermark or sell these images.
IS THERE A BOOKING FEE?
Yes. I require a 50% booking fee to be paid at the time of booking, with the outstanding balance payable on the day of your photo shoot.
DO I NEED TO SIGN A CONTRACT?
Yes. The contract will be sent to you at the time of booking. The link to this contract is valid for 7 days and your booking will not be confirmed until I receive this along with your booking fee. Your booking is not secure until I receive the contract and booking fee.
WHAT IS THE AVERAGE SPEND?
My clients usually spend anywhere between £300 and £2000. Please be advised that there is a £50 minimum spend on A La Carte products. My most popular package is package 3 which includes 5 unique bordered prints.
I RUN A PET BUSINESS - CAN YOU HELP WITH PHOTOGRAPHS FOR MY WEBSITE?
Absolutely! For commercial pet photography, I charge a half day rate or a full day rate, and you will have a choice of receiving 5, 10 or all of the digital files to use on your website. Please contact me to discuss.
For animal charities advertising animals needing homes, I am always happy to volunteer and do this for free.
