What to Wear for an Autumn Photo Session
Autumn is one of my favourite seasons for photography because of the magical colours it gives us. The leaves turn to orange and red, giving us warmth whilst the weather turns cooler, allowing us to dress up in chunky jumpers, coats and layers.
It can be difficult to know what to wear for an Autumn photo shoot. So, I have put together some tips before you have your photo shoot with me.
Consider Colour Coordination
Try not to clash with each other when you decide on an outfit. Wear similar tones and colours so as you compliment each other. But also, compliment the backdrop. The location will be autumnal, so this will be warm oranges, browns, yellows and reds. Compliment these colours by wearing denim, creams, oranges, mustards, greys, reds and plums. They all work well for an autumn shoot and give a pop of colour.
Try to avoid bright, vivid colours. Pinks, Greens, Purples do not blend well with Autumn. Please avoid patterns. Plain is best, and avoid large lettering or logos.
Although I know black is a popular colour, it can look very dull, so try to consider something else.
It does not mean you all have to come wearing the same colour. Colour co-ordinate with similar tones.
Consider Colour Palettes
What colours do you have in your home? Where will you be hanging, or placing your photographs? If your home is bright and airy, then creams and yellows may work with clothing. If it is dark and deep colours, then browns and oranges may work best.
The main thing is that you are comfortable. Wear shoes that you can walk in, as some locations may require some walking to find the best backdrop. Boots and wellingtons work well for autumn photo shoots and mean that your feet won't get wet. Avoid trainers if you can. If you are most comfortable in jeans, then wear jeans. You do not have to turn up in evening wear or suits - be as comfortable and as relaxed as you can be. I want you to enjoy it.
Consider the weather
The weather is often very chilly in Autumn. If you want to wear coats for your photo shoot, that is absolutely fine. Dress for the season. This means boots, scarves and gloves, then these all work well for an Autumnal session. If you would prefer to remove your coats for the session, please make sure you have layers on to avoid getting too cold. Hats and scarves can add style.
If it is raining the day of your photo shoot, I will often reschedule. However, a little bit of drizzle will actually work well for a photo shoot, giving us to opportunity to work with umbrellas and wellies.
The location will often be a factor in how sheltered we are and the backdrop it provides. Most of my autumn sessions take place in the Yate & Chipping Sodbury area of Bristol, and all provide a lovely colourful backdrop. The images below were taken in Yate, and the Coalpit Heath area of Bristol in previous years. You can see the warm and magical colours that Autumn gives us here.
